Marc Vivien Foé Award: Karl Toko Ekambi named African player of the year

Cameroon striker Karl Toko Ekambi has just won the tenth edition of the Marc Vivien Foé Award. He was thus elected African player of the year by RFI.

The 25-year-old won the Marc Vivien Foe prize in front of Tunisian striker Wahbi Khazri and Burkina Faso striker Bertrand Traore. The Cameroon striker playing at Angers league 1 of France is the first indomitable Lion to win the prize since its creation in 2009.

By winning the tenth edition of the Marc Vivien Foé Award, Toko-Ekambi, who won the African Cup of Nations last year with Cameroon, succeeds Ivorian midfielder Jean Michael Seri.

Karl Toko Ekambi was chosen by a jury of 68 experts in the field of football. The France-born forward scored 17 goals for Angers this season to be the eighth highest scorer in Ligue 1.

The Marc Vivien Foé Award

This prize is a tribute to Marc Vivien Foé, this talented Cameroonian defensive midfielder born in Yaounde who died June 26, 2003 at the Gerland stadium in Lyon, during Cameroon game against Colombia counting for the Cup of Nations.

This distinction instituted in 2009 by RFI serves to reward only African players playing in the French Premier League Championship.
