17-year-old Kenyan creates energy from human waste

It all started after the construction of a new dorm at the Maseno school near Kisumu resulted in pit latrines and a faulty sewage that left foul odors and polluted local freshwater sources. Leroy Mwasaru's and a group of friends then decided to fix the issue by using human waste to power the gas stoves.

They first started with cow dung and food waste which they used instead of human waste during the prototype phase. Impressed by the teens work, "Innovate Kenya" awarded them funds to purchase a digester, which helps with the process. Once the teenagers proved their prototype worked with cow dung, they started using human waste as well.
