Africa’s own top level domain: dotAfrica, now available to the public

Africa has now reclaimed its digital identity. We are living an historical moment as Africa’s first ever domain has been launched, and made available to the general public.

The DotAfrica is the new Top Level Domain (TLD) for the African continent. It is an African initiative created by Africans for Africans and open to the worldwide audience of companies, organizations and individuals.

What are the origins of the DotAfrica domain ?
The DotAfrica was initially requested in 2000 by a handful of African Internet professionals, who strongly argued that dotAfrica should be operated by Africans for the benefit of the entire continent. That’s how the AU member states organs requested the AUC to fast track the launch and operation of dotAfrica.

What are the benefits ?
Some of the benefits of a .africa domain name include “showcasing one’s brand and commitment to the African continent, establishing one’s brand’s regional influence and acquiring valuable online presence fast-growing and high-potential market called Africa”.

How to register for a “.africa” domain ?
To register and activate a “.africa” domain, please visit Web4Africa, an ICANN Accredited Domain Registrar established in 2002, offering web services from its own servers and network equipment from 4 data centres across 3 African countries.

Africa has finally reclaimed its digital identity, which will allow the continent to both uplift itself and contribute to the global digital economy.
