Abidjan hosted its first Kizomba festival

Kizomba is the most represented African dance anywhere in the world. Indeed, which large (or even small) city does not host at least a kizomba evening, or even a festival? Abidjan, the economic capital of Côte d’Ivoire, is not far behind. Following the initiative of two kizomba dancers, Abidjan hosted last weekend its first Kizomba festival.

A kizomba festival that goes beyond the dance

Beyond the simple weekend of dance and music, the organizers have concocted a real journey of discovery of Côte d’Ivoire for participants. As indicates Frederic Koko, the president of the association Akwaba Kizomba “It’s a bit like a summer camp around kizomba!”

And that has the merit of being underlined. More than 100 dancers from many countries take part in this event. They visit in particular some unavoidable places of Ivory Coast.

The Yamoussoukro, Boulay Island, Grand Bassam and many other emblematic places of the country are displayed on this tourist and cultural program.

The festival itself will only delight fans of kizomba, semba, urban kiz …

The rhythmic schedule of different workshops is also punctuated by parties hosted by local DJs from several European countries.

Let’s take a moment to talk about the genesis of the project.

Akwaba kizomba festival, a dance event organized by dancers

Kizomba is a real success around the world. Thus it is not rare that the festivals are organized by evening promoters, event agencies or even by tourism professionals. Here, this is not the case ; participants will certainly echo the differences they have observed.
The Akwaba kizomba festival was initiated by Frédéric and Fabien. These two kizomba dancers wished to propose an event bringing together African and European dancers. With such an idea, Côte d’Ivoire, a country of hospitality, could only be a good choice!
This adventure is also collective. Indeed the two co-founders invited other Ivorians, among others. Dancers, DJs and teachers joined in this project. So this is not an imported kizomba festival. Abidjan dancers took part in the organization. This has also facilitated the practical steps.
With such intentions, this festival could only appeal to private organizations and actors, solicited as partners. Among these are the Residences NIABLE, UNESCO, the CIT (Ivory Coast Tourism), One Million Factory, Hollywood Boulevard and the Assinie Beach Club.
All this is a good omen for the first edition of the Kizomba festival held in Abidjan from August 12 to 21, 2018.
