Ugandan British Daniel Kaluuya nominated for Best Actor at the 2018 Oscars

Ugandan-British actor Daniel Kaluuya has been nominated for an Oscar Award as Best Actor for his role in the hit horror film Get Out.

Daniel Kaluuya faces strong competition from established Hollywood stars including Denzel Washington and Daniel Day-Lewis – as well as Call Me By Your Name’s Timothée Chalamet, 22, who is the youngest actor ever nominated in the category.

Born in the UK in 1989 from Ugandan parents, Daniel started his career in theatre, and then appeared a several British television shows such as Skins and Sucker Punch. He first landed a role in an American movie in Denis Villeneueve’s 2015 thriller Sicario, but it was Netflix and the streaming giant’s acquisition of Black Mirror that really thrust him into the limelight:

“I did Black Mirror in 2011. It didn’t really have any traction at home, and then Netflix happened. So Black Mirror hit Netflix like three or four years later, and then Jordan [Peele] saw me in Black Mirror, and he said “I’ve got this script.” We Skyped, and then during the press for Sicario, I went to L.A.. I read it, and I got the part” (Daniel Kaluuya)

Daniel Kaluuya becomes the first actor of Ugandan origin to get nominated for an Oscar. Him who is now 28 years old, has already received a BAFTA nomination and a Golden Globe nomination for his breakthrough role in Get out.
